これは１８６１年にオハイオ州シンシナティで
ミンストレル・ショー向けに出版された曲で、
作詞は William Whiteman Fosdick、作曲は George R. Poulton。
アメリカの南北戦争時代に
戦場の兵士が故郷に残した愛する女性Aura Leeを思って歌った歌。
兵士の間に歌い継がれるうちに様々な歌詞のヴァージョンが出来ました。
Aura Lee は実在の人物で Aura Lea とも綴られます。
エルビス・プレスリーがカバーした 『Love Me Tender』の方が、
実際に有名かもしれません。
